my brother teaches high school science and wants to set up a tank with fish that he can breed. he wants the fish to be very colorful and big enough for the kids to see the eggs/frys. he wants to set up a 55g probably, any suggestions? thanks!

for a 55g i think mollies would be better. or mollies and guppies. they are both easy to breed, but the mollies are larger, so it might be easier to see the fry. also they can all be kept in the same tank if you provide cover for the fry like soft leafy plants. Hornwort is great for this and is foolproof to grow.

how easy are green terrors to breed?

actually i think a really good fish for you would be a pair of convict cichlids. they would fit perfectly in a 55g tank, are fairly large (6" long) and breed like rabbits. its hard to keep them FROM breeding. also they are good parents so are very unlikely to eat the fry. the fry can be sold to a local fish store (or just given away) to be used as feeders.

but, as RC just said, perfect for a pair of convicts.

Hmmn, how about electric yellow labs or kenyi? I guess it really depends upon how much time and effort he has to dedicate to the subject. I would have to think that a 55g tank with guppies would get out of hand myself. Mollies still seem like a good option. Also what is he planning to do with the aquarium durring the long breaks? I also wonder if all the trafic and attention the tank will be getting would be overly stressful for fish such as cichlids.

i wouldnt want to do anything other then cheaper fish cuz kids are stupid. i wouldnt trust them.

hey lay off buddy im 15 and im smart and trustworthy. It's people like you who make generalized statements that get me mad. how can u possibly say that? like come on buddy think before u speak. GEZZ

yeah he did say high school Mgamer20o0.im 14 and that is a pretty stereotipical statment you made.

Anyway I would say guppys, they're great little fish and breed like rabbits too. I have no experience with convicts, but they might be a more intersesting fish in terms of size baring in mind the age of the students he teaches may find the guppys some what childish??? I know i wouldnt but just giving you ideas.
