I was at my local PetSmart today picking up some food and was checking out their tanks when I noticed some signs promoting the new fish they'll be carrying. The one that caught my eye was they will be carrying clown knifes for only 6.99. That seems like a steal to me since the BGK's are $15.99 and the only true LFS in town has only had two CK's that I've seen and they were $35 and $40 for 6" and 8" respectively. I don't know how big these CK's will be, but I definitely will be checking them out once they come in.

I have seen CK at public aquariums at about 3' (yes, 36").

You could keep the clown knife until it has almost outgrown your tank, and then you can give it to your LFS for store credit to buy other fishes. You could make more than $10 in store credit so you could sell to LFS for $15 plus.

IME the LFS will accept them for a VERY small price, ussually it has to be free in order for them to accept. Also, it's not like your going to be makign riddiculous amounts of money off it, IF your lucky you might break even by selling one after a couple months. Doesn't make sense to me...

Better check with the LFS, if your plan is to sell it back when it outgrows your tank. There isn't a whole lot of demand for fish that are too big for the average tank, and many LFS won't even take them back for free, let alone give you any money/credit.

That does seem like an awfully low price...

My LFS pays you a fair amount of money. Say the fish costs $10, they will give you at least $7 back store credit, so if the fish costs $35 or $40 or your LFS, and you buy the fish from somewhere else like petsmart for $7, then you can get at least $25 back store credit if you give it to the LFS that charges more for the same fish. That is what I do, I buy 5 for $5 from a healthy Petco, and give those same fish to my favorite LFS for $10 and use the extra $5 to buy other more expensive fish.

People like you are probably the reason many LFS do not give much, if any, credit for trade in. My one LFS will give you 25% of what they sell the fish for in store credit. The others do not take trade ins or they will only take fish for free.

My LFS still does this only if the fish is healthy, and as long as you still buy fish from there without using store credit too. Mostly, I just breed shrimp/fish and take them to the LFS to trade in for plants/fish. They are okay with people doing that. I am waiting for my rams to breed though.
