Good first gun?

You'll want to look at a beginner gun that is easy to shoot, low in recoil and something that shoots cheap, plentiful ammo and a .22 is the way to go. My first gun was a Marlin Model 60SS .22 rifle. I loved that gun and killed many a can with it all summer long when I was a kid. Another good .22 rifle and one that I recently picked up is the Ruger 10/22 .22 cal. They make it in many different models and all come with a 10 round magazine. They are pretty cheap (mine was on sale at Bass Pro Shop for $189.99) and they make many different aftermarket parts for it including stocks, tiggers and barrels.
BS, fin stabilized 12g slugs can hit targets 200+ yards away accurately, but its expensive ammo.
Remington 870's are great for all levels of skill with shotguns. if your just shooting squirrels in the backyard, you cant go wrong with a .223. but if its something you might be serious into and going with your old man to ranges, maybe you and him should consider building one...
ar15's are easy shoot, and you can learn how to maintain its. besides a kalashnikov, m4/15/16's are one of the most popular weapons available and has a very strong market for parts and accessories. 5.56 is also inexpensive. most weapons you can pick up relativly cheap at gun shows and auctions, but ammo overtime will take its toll on your wallet.
My first gun after a BB gun was a 410 ga /22 cal over and under. Little bit of this , a little bit of that

Too bad my parents won't let me go near a gun :/
You can't go wrong with a pellet gun for light hunting, but you said you want an accurate gun that you can still pick little things off with and also shoot long distances... So I'd go with a rifle. Don't know what make (I don't know anything about guns) But if you want accurate go with the rifle.
I'll just stick with my Tippmann :]

My father worked part time at an outdoor range when I was younger. When I was 12 I was allowed to shoot a few .22's. My favorite was the old single-shot bolt action with the V sight. Since I was 12, it was the closest thing at the time to a sniper rifle that I could get my hands on. :laugh: I practiced with that thing a lot. At one point I could shoot the cap off the top of a gatorade bottle with relative ease at 100yds. Target shooting can be great fun. The only important thing is gun safety. Being that my dad worked at the range, I learned all about gun safety before my little hands ever even felt a gun in them.
