Good Gravel Vacuum?

I'm looking for a good gravel vacuum...one that's not too expensive. I had a cheap green plastic one that hooked up to my air pump and didn't work very well (maybe not the way I wanted it to anyway). It didn't syphon any water out of the tank either.....do most vacs siphon water out of the tank? I guess I don't really know how gravel vacs work or how they are supposed to. Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you!

The one I use is called a Python. They cost more than the ones you have to suck on to start the syphon. Worth it for me.

It's possible that the one I had was one that you have to suck on to start, but there were no directions and there was this cotton bag that went on near the top of it to catch the sludge.
 
I just read a description of a Python gravel vac and it said you could use it to fill, drain, and add new water: while adding water how does that work and more importantly are you able to put water conditioners in the water?

I use a simple top fin gravel vac. All I need to do is move it up and down rapidly at a 45* angle and th syphon starts by itself. No more putting the tube to my mouth and hope to not taste fishwater. Cost me $6 and works very well.
 
But drinking fish water is half the fun of cleaning! :dive2:

Python systems are great. I still suck on the end of mine to gravel vac though. I put the end of it in my bathtub. I get a stronger syphon this way.

thumbs up to the python i use it and it reall didn't cost that much. And you can technically fluctuate the sucking power. It's awsome. Take advice from a water changing fanatic...it's my favorite. :coffee2:
 
Deffinetly agree, just used mine for the first time today:) I can't believe that I used a manual siphon lol.
I would spend the extra $$$ and get it. Make sure that you need it for the tank size though, rather useless on a 10 gallon.
