What's the "best" "low-cost" choice for getting 110watts onto a 55gallon? (without causing excessive heat).

Can it be done for under $100? Even better... under $50? Better still... under $30?

My existing hood gets me about .6w/g... I've got a fairly decent variety of plants growing under that light- so I'm not desperate to improve- and if I can't do it cheaply- probably won't for some time.

Ill be keeping an eye on this thread as I am in the same boat. I was thinking about going to lowes or home depot and buying one of their T5(or 2) fixtures and then bolting them to my canopy on top of a reflector bought from an LFS. I havent looked to see how much the fixtures cost yet tho.

Thank you, I'll have to check that out.

Kanvas, what I ended up doing was taking out the flourescent strip that came with the aquarium- spray painting the inside white with Rustoleum high-heat paint and installed 6 20w Compact Flourescents instead.

Lowes looks the best place (I've found) for CFLs- having a four pack of 20w with a 6500Kelvin colour for under $12. (look for Bright Effects Daylight bulbs).

Total cost under $40 for 120watts on my 55 gallon. If you search for DIY lighting on the forum there are lots of examples on here- a lot simpler to do than it may sound.

wow, ok, there is just so many choices out there that it make my head spin just to think about but there isn't many that i can afford as a college student :D

I completely understand the budget angle... I've been trying to do everything as low cost as possible.

Assuming you already have a hood that is big enough to fit CFLs under and has lights that you want to upgrade in it. I don't think you will beat DIY retrofitting of the hood for price if you want to increase lighting to 2wpg or more.

Costs:
$2.50 per light socket
$3 per CFL

$4 white Spray Paint
guessing $1 Wire connectors (if you don't have them- I did as a student you probably don't)

If you do what I did- 6x20watt 6500Kelvin CFLs: (6*2.50) + (6*3) + 4 + 1 = $38

Oh, and if you don't have machine screws and bolts to attach to top of hood add another buck or two: $40.

I really don't think there is a less expensive option unless you luck out someone selling a hood with lights on e-bay or Craigslist for less.

Wiring is VERY simple- just connect the wires coming into the existing hood to your light sockets- although if you've never done anything like it before you may want a friend who is handy to help. Loose wires, electricity and water is a potential recipe for disaster if you're not carefull! ;)

If you don't already have a low powered light hood to refit it's going to cost you more buying a light source.

If you just have fish and no plants- You don't really need any light. Even if you have low light- ambient room light- some plants like Java Ferns would still grow.

There are options for the budgetry minded. (is budgetry a word?)

Thanks for that link, Riiz. Those lights are the best deal I have seen for t5ho. I hope they come out with a 30 inch version for my 20 long.
