good or bad to change around decorations

The standard guideline is to only relocate 1/2 of your ornaments at a time (cleaning etc.). My fish sometimes move more than that overnight, but my tank is designed to look like a natural habitat and has semi-strong current, I imagine in a river/stream that in any given spot there's quite a difference in branches/logs drifting by day to day.

I have to move driftwood just about every cleaning because I like to make sure my crayfish/crab and those darn snails (semi-infested :duh: ) aren't making too much of a mess under there.

Most of my "decorations" are the plants; I move the inanimate things around a bit to vacuum the gravel at the weekly water changes, and whenever I need to rearrange the plants, e.g., when I snip and move Vallisneria runners, or plant new rootlings. But the basic layout of the 55-gallon stays pretty much the same ... a "cave" at either end and moss-covered driftwood in the center (I used to lift it to vacuum under it, but now the Kuhli loaches hide under it, and I figure they keep it stirred up enough.
