I would like to add a nice, "single" fish to my 20 gallon tall. I plan on adding a couple bottom feeders, but would like a larger, possibly "showey" fish as well. Does anyone have any ideas for something compatable and that would fit size wise? Thanks!

Just curiuos, is the the 20g tall which is 24" long, or the x tall that is the same size as two 10's stacked up?

Assuming a 24" long tank, I would reccomend a blue or pearl gourami, They are pretty awesome IMO and one will fit nicely as a showpeice in a 20g. you could also get a beatta, and give him culture shock with 20gallons of tank space.

single fish

As long as you don't get bottom feeders that need really warm water. One of the fancy goldfish would make a great pet fish. Some of them are simply georgeous and have lots of personality. If you filter real well you probably could have 2.

Maybe a nice, good looking angelfish? a 20 tall is the perfect size for one. don't get two though, they'll probably fight. and 3 is getting pretty overstocked.

Some people say they should be kept in groups but I've heard of many a loner angelfish doing just fine.

I wouldn't put more than one fancy goldfish in a 20gal. they produce a lot of waste, and even on overfiltered 20gal would quickly build up with nitrates and other toxins.

[edit]

Just saw your sig-- a goldfish would not be compatible with your current tank inhabitants. they require very different diet and temperature, and a goldfish produces far more waste than the tropical fish you have.

In my 20H I have several Dwarf Gouramis. You can get 2 Powder Blue, 2 Fire Red, and 2 Sunshine yellow, and have a very nice show tank. Their color is stunning, one of the brightest freshwater fishes.

If you want a single fish, then I second the recommendation fo the Paradise Gourami. Although, you could also add some long-finned Zebra Danios to create action at the surface.
