Gorgonian not opening

Hi, I have had a saltwater tank running for about a year and a half now with mostly fish and motile inverts, but I do have one nice big (about a foot tall and very branching) gorgonian (some Caribbean species). It's always done well despite the fact that it spent 6 months lying on its side, and it's flourished since I moved it to the spot its in now about 6 moths ago with a decent amount water movement. I do 10% water changes every week but I got a little behind and missed 2 weeks in a row, then on the third I just did my normal water change, and since then the gorgonian hasn't reopened :( I rarely catch the tank as the light comes one, but I did see it this past weekend and it seemed to start coming out for half an hour or so (about halfway out) then went right back in. Maybe it's doing this every day, maybe not, but I have not seen its polyps fully extended for the past week now.

I know I should probably be able to tell you the water parameters but I don't have a working test kit at the moment. What I can say is that since the water change nothing else in the tank has been adversely affected, including all the fish (3 blue chromis [chromii?], 2 ocellaris clowns, a royal gramma and a coral beauty angel), the motile inverts (a skunk cleaner, serpent star, several types of snails and limpets, two types of hermits), or even the very small number of other non-motile inverts (an oyster, a few green star polyps, and a small clear anemone-ish thing that's been there since I set up the tank). The only chemical parameter I check is the salinity using a refractometer, which I made sure was not changed. Any idea what could be happening?

My gorgonian goes into a sulk every so often. He wont open for a week or so. I can always convince him/her/them to open by turning off the filter and feeding a 'milk' of liquidized fresh mussels or clams with a couple of plankton tabs. Hope this helps.

I agree, adding in some food to lure the polyps out might help. Mine closes up when snails or crabs move past or climb on it. It's possible that something is pressing on it - you might check that next.
