Oh yea and paint the back of your tank too. It'll make it look a hell of a lot better no matter what your set up ends up being.

If you want plants I'd ditch the included hood, get the glass versatop and look for a cheap dual t5ho fixture. You may end up having to get a 24", a few people make 30's that house 24" bulbs though. LED's could be an option as well if budget allows you'd be looking at starting prices around $200.
^^ Agreed. On a 20L, I could see a standard T8 hood maybe growing java fern or anubia, but on an extremely tall 37g, I can't see it doing much unless you've got the plants way up high on driftwood or the likes.
To the OP, it sounds like you really need to do some more homework and figure out exactly what you want as far as tank size and shape, what you want to stock it with, how you intend to cycle the tank, etc.........

I'm across the room from a 37g aquarium, lit by a 30" Finnex Ray 2 7000K light. It does relatively well and was less than $100

Think I am going to stick with the 37. I like the shape and I am sure I can make it work. I will try stocking with the fish recommended, and will see if I can exchange the hood and do some taller plants.

What kind of plants though? Finnex is a pretty decent fixture but on such a tall tank I have doubts about it on anything other then lower end medium light plants.
So, I called the dealer, and even though the stickers on the aquarium are off the manager said he'd accept an exchange if I upgrade.
Then I had a friend who is a lifetime fish keeper over. He recommended the 55g over my current setup. He also recommended an aquaclear filter, so I am going to exchange. The more I look at the space, the smaller the 37g looks in it.

Since the 55g is so long I always recommend using 2 filters, one on each end.
