That is what I do in my planted tank. Just under the surface and pointed down. It can be pointed at any angle you want as long as it doesn't agitate the surface. That is for a planted tank of course. If not planting, it really doesn't matter.

well come to find out only the xp4 comes with stars. so right now i have a aquaclear 500 (110) and the xp3. both have the bio ceramic things in them. i borrowed some from the 110 for now till i get more. i to have a half way planted tank. the plants are still growing. would have never thought of poly fill. it doesn't get out and clog the motor? i have noticed my water looks much cleaner and bluer. the neighbor came over and even thought something was different. she ask if we had bought the fliter we wanted. i can't seem to find the pot scrubbers anywhere. where should i look? tried target,dollar store, navy exchange and commissary. none of them had them.

walmart didn't have any either. guess i'm just having bad luck with finding them.
