Got a pistol shrimp/goby pair!! Pico tank

beautiful pair though!

Are these guys nocturnal? It's been a couple days now, and from the beginning these guys are nowhere to be seen. After introduction to the tank, they burrowed under the liverock and sealed up the entrances. My fiancee was concerned (after not seeing anything for a few days) that they were dead, so she gently lifted the liverock. Both critters seem fine. The liverock was put back, and within an hour the shrimp had sealed up any gaps. The goby looked around a bit, but went inside just before the entrance was sealed. Is this normal? Could my light be too bright (doubt it)?

it really depends on what else is in the tank...they will stay in their burrow if they think there is a constant threat around thier area...commonly though, no, they are not nocturnal...the watchman, in a comfortable enviroment will spend its time at the entrance to the burrow simple watching life go by...keep an eye over a pistol if one is present....

I would say, in your situation, that its simply just getting used to your tank..it should be fine, given time...

That is a great pic, nice choice on your pair! That shrimp has nice coloration!

Watchman should come out in a day or so like Niko pointed out, it is just getting used to your tank. Try to swat some pellets or flake food down to close to the entrance to their cave one of them will come out and grab it, probably the watchman, but who knows, you might get lucky and catch a glimpse of the pistol!

Thanks for the info. It's been 3 days (minus our "deathwatch" intrusion yesterday), and the entrances are still sealed up. The liverock they are under is hollow, so they have an interior, perhaps they are grazing on microcrustaceans in there. I just worry they'll starve. I fed some brineshrimp, and tossed in a tiny ghost shrimp hoping to entice them out, but nothing yet. The only motile tankmate is the margarita snail.

Still no action, we might have to intrude again to check on them. I'm thinking of putting them into the 46g FOWLR tank. I'm sure the fish wouldn't bother them. But would the pistol shrimp kill the emerald, arrow and porcelain crabs? There's a large peppermint shrimp in there too, so he might be in jeopardy, but the pistol is cooler.

yea I wouldnt risk it. I keep mine in a 10 and feed him ghosties and it take no time to hear the clicking

Update: They're alive and well, feeding regularly on frozen brine. We didn't see much of them for a week or 10 days. My fiancee got some live brineshrimp from a distant fish store, and they came right out. Now they feed quite hungrily on frozen brineshrimp, and they share food. They're not really exploring the tank much that we've seen.
