Got my fish tank today!

It just really depends on the individual betta. I've kept some with goldfish, rainbow sharks, bristlenose plecos (only get to about 5 inches; a great addition to smaller tanks w/o bust'n them), and many others. I've also had some that I couldn't keep with anything. I've had some 1 inch bettas trying to attack 6 inch goldfish. It all just depends on their temperament. I even had one that I could mix with guppies.

Bummer, guess I'm gonna go with bettas only.

Maybe I could use the divider and give my betta about 1/3 of the tank wich would give him around 3 or so gallons and use the rest for other fishes? Anyone ever tried that?

people are really misinformed about what you can and cannot put with bettas. Under normal cercumstances you can put any fish(that won't harm the betta) in with it, as long as it
a) isn't another male betta in a small area
b) doesn't closely resembe a male betta
Bettas have a reputation to rip apart any other fish but this is not the truth. They are only aggresive to other male bettas(and on occasion a female betta). The reason for this is becasue they live in areas that have small, encolsed places that they cannot escape (i.e. small ponds and rice fields) they defent their (small) area. They will attack another male betta untill one dies, but they will not just attack a fish passing by. They do this so that they can mate with females. They are fairly good tank mates for most community fish, but do not like to be in a fast boisterous tank, because they are so calm.

Seriously. You should give it a try first. Usually bettas aren't too bad around any other fish just their own kind or those that kinda look like them. Like guppies because of their tails. If the betta gets too testy then use the divider, if it doesn't then you won't even need the divider. That way all the fish get the whole tank. I've had mixed exp. you never know.

Ok let's say I don't use the divider, what should I try in a 10 gallon with 1 male betta in mind?

And like you said, if he gets attacked or attack other fishes then I'll use the divider or simply buy him a nice lil 5 gallon for himself only.

You could probably keep like 5 white clouds with your betta in a 10 gallon tank without any problems...If any did arise, well, white clouds are pretty cheap. Or maybe you could keep three cories with your betta instead. I can't think of why a betta would bother cories, and I've never heard of cories bothering anything.

Well first off you just got your fish tank today right? Right now you should worry more about the cycling process before you add/put any fish in there. That way you'll know for sure if it's your betta doing the harrassing if anything dies lol.

"What fish should I get?" gets asked so much here. Personally I think the person should look for themselves and then ask if what they want would work together. Go around to your local fish stores and see whats available. Then take note of what you like and research it here on the net. If you have any further questions or want to know about personal exp. with a certain fish then ask on here. I find this is the best way to go about it. That way you read the info yourself and aren't counting so much on what people have heard or read.

Beyond that I find that after so many people throw in their 2 cents the person who asks in the first place always get something else, or follows up with questions about the fish that others suggested. All this could have been solved the easy way.

Everybody has their own 'taste' in fish. Find what makes you happy.

I've heard many horror stories about bettas that's why I'm asking here.

If it wasn't for it I would of probably made my choices by now but I'm stubborn and I want a betta :p

I don't know if you cought this from any of the many posts here on ac, but I (as well as many others) wouldn't trust any fish from wal-mart. So I don't count that as a lfs. I've seen a few times some fish that I really like there but I would never get anything from there and mix it with my tanks.
