Got my fish tank today!

Malakhov, a betta will not hurt other fish (unless it is an exceptionally grumpy one). They are fairly peacful fish and cause next to no problems for other fish!

Alright, guess I wanted to be too cautious
I'll keep on reading threads here and see some other possibilities. I've been reading this forum all night long, awesome and interesting stuff!

lol :) thats good to hear. Yeah as vato has been trying to point out they shouldn't (<- key word) hurt any other type of fish. I have personally had both exp with them. Just make sure you cycle your tank before putting too much in there. If you don't already know about the cycle there's a sticky on it.

Yep I looked over at the cycling threads, looked complicated at first but now it's not so bad :D

don't worry about em! they are great community fish. I wrote a longer relpy about bettas a little farther up this post Malakhov. read that. It's a common misconception that they are killers but they are really great little fish!

While bettas can be good community members, it is not true that they will only attack other male bettas. A female betta in with a male may be harassed, chased, and stressed to death. Other anabantids, like dwarf gourami, may also be attacked by the betta. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but you should be aware that there could be problems and keep a close eye on things -- keeping in mind that even if things go well for a few weeks, that is no guarantee that they will continue to get along. You have to be attentive.

The other thing to consider is not just what the betta might attack, but also what might be harmful to the betta. Barbs, esp. tiger barbs, can be trouble because the long fins of the slow-moving betta are an attractive target. Fast-moving fish like danios might bother the betta, too -- I doubt that most danios would nip a betta, but all that frenetic movement could stress the betta and make it less outgoing than it usually would be.
