As the title implies, I went ahead and bought the XP2, so I will be replacing the Emperor 400 on my tank with the XP2. No more stinkin shrimp getting into my filter and causing me 3 hours of headaches. I like the canisters more anyway. At any rate, my girlfriend is inheriting a 29g tank, which is going to need a complete overhaul. I'll be giving her the Emperor 400, hoping that it will be adequate. (it has a LOT of bio media in it... the 2 grey expansion things which are designed for extra carbon are packed with Seachem Matrix) Here's my question: If I took the Emperor 400 off of my tank and let it dry up, will that kill off all of the beneficial bacteria? Its no real big deal if it does, we won't have the 29g tank ready for a few more weeks anyway. Perhaps I'll just stick the matrix in my new XP2 and let it stay alive in there until we're ready to set up her Emperor 400...

Your second idea is a winner. Put the media in the XP2. It will keep it alive and also give your XP2 a jump start so it can take over quickly without a whole new cycle. By the time the weeks have gone by and its time to set up the 29, the XP2 should be able to stand alone without the media you added and you can put it back in the emperor so its like a cycled filter to get the new tank going.

And that's exactly what we're going to do, if my gf does a freshwater tank with her 29g. Now she's seriously contemplating trying her hand at salt water... more than likely FOWLR, but possibility of a few pieces of coral. She really has her heart set on a Tridacna Crocea clam... but we're still looking into how likely it is that she'll be able to do that. I'll start a thread about that in the Marine Newbie section and see what opinions I can gather there. As of right now, I have 1l of Seachem Matrix in each of my canisters running on my 55g tank... so according to the container it came in, 340 square feet of surface area. (just in the matrix, not including any other filter media) Hmmm.... 17' x 20'.... that's a heck of a lot larger than my bedroom. :p:
