I had two blue gouramies in a tall 30 gallon tank but removed one (I think a female) as the other one was getting very aggressive and eating its tail. They have been seperate for six days now. This morning I found a bubble nest in the tank with the aggressive male. Is this normal? Why would he make a nest if there is no female in there? Should I transfer the other gourami back (assuming its a female?)

male gouramis can be a real pain when they decide to defend their territory or during spawning, which i think is whats probably happening. you should be able to make sure you have a male & female by the shape. have a look at

it can be better to introduce the male into a tank that the female has been in for a couple of weeks rather than vice versa so the male doesn't feel like his space is being invaded!

What type of gourami?
If they are of the blue/gold variety look at the dorsal fin. On a male it will be longer and pointed, on a female it will be shorter and rounded.
I just had two paradise fish (a relative of the gouriami) spawn in a tank I had hoped they would just keep cycled and running while I was awaiting a shipment of fish.
