Gourami infected wound - Help please!

I'm so sorry Fabio, it doesn't sound as if she's going to make it. If you want to try salt, go ahead. I don't think at this point there's anything we have available to help, and nothing may help at this point, other than euthanasia.

Fabio... how is she? I pm'd one of the AC members that is one of the gurus here, Kyryah. She keeps a variety of fish and aquatic life and has for many years... I'm hoping she may have some ideas, but really at this point... Lucy may be too far gone.

I've put her on a breeding net in her favorite corner (I don't want the other fish to eat her alive), and I'm slowly adding salt...

I have to run off to work for a bit, be back in a two or three hours. I'm sure Kyryah is reading through the pages of this thread to bring herself up to speed with the illness and treatment progress, so far. She may have some suggestions.

Good to keep her apart from the other fish. Also, it may make it easier for her to get a gulp of air, keeping her in the net near the surface.

I wish with all my heart that Lucy will get better. brb ASAP

I don't think this is a case of fungus. It looks to me like a bacterial infection.

If the poor girl is dropsying, then there probably isn't much that you can do for her at this point. However, I suggest using a broad spectrum antibiotic. The problem with dropsy is that it is not a disease in of itself, but a physical manifestation of kidney failure due to underlying health issues. These issues can be bacterial, fungal, or parasitical in nature.

If you have it available to you, I suggest treating her with Maracyn II. It is a broad spectrum antibiotic that helps with many bacterial infections. The active ingredient is 10 mg Minocycline activity.

The antibiotics only remain viable for 24 hours or so in the water, so I would perform a 50% water change, dose the tank, wait 24 hours, and repeat.

I don't think that salt will have any benefits in this case, and I would be cautious with malachite green. In her weakened state, it can push her over the edge. I would try the antibiotics, continue with 50% daily changes to keep the water pristine and hope for the best.

You may want to up the airflow to the tank by means of an added airstone during treatment.

Thanks a lot for your help and support Mel and Kristina!
If she makes it tonight I'll try finding the antibiotic (it is going to be tough because in UK you ALWAYS need a prescription for that), and I'll get an airpump too.
I guess at this stage the salt can't do much harm, so I'm giving it a go (6 litres of water already through, 6 to go, for a total of 80 grams).

I'm going to bed not (midnight approaching here) and she is still hanging there in her favorite spot....

Reading here and there I found this interesting product (that I should be able to find) successfully used by lot of people to cure dropsy:
Interpet Anti Internal Bacteria
For internal systemic bacterial infections, popeye, dropsy, ulcers and emaciation.

BTW since Lucy is in the main tank do you think I will need to treat all fish with antibiotic? Or should I move her to a Q thank?

I would move her, watch all the other fish carefully for any sign of infection, including any change in behavior, and keep the main tank absolutely pristine.

Make sure their water has absolutely no traces of ammonia or nitrites, and keep nitrates below 20. I would do daily, partial water changes in the main tank to removed excess dissolved organic compounds.

Clean water can help their immune systems resist infection.

Treat Lucy in the Q tank, and keep her water pristine. I have heard of Interpet products and I believe they are good.

Best wishes for you and Lucy. I so hope she makes it.

Unfortunately I found her dead in the morning :(
Anyway I feel we did everything we could to try to save her, but maybe it was already too late...
I'm really glad I had your help and support Mel, thanks!!!

Any recommended action to clear/disinfect the tank or should I just do the usual 30% water change?
I guess there is no point in continuing the anti fungal treatment...

I'm so terribly sorry, Fabio, for your loss. So very sorry. Please keep a watchful eye on the male Gourami that was her companion.

I would go ahead and get the Interpet product you mentioned, to have on hand, just in case.

I would carefully watch the other fish in the tank, and strive to keep the water conditions pristine through water changes; every day if you can.

Again, I'm so very sorry for the loss of Lucy.
