Gourami with white spot????? HELP

Thanks ct-death, they were very helpful. I have a tank for him to go into so i can quarentine him now.

I don't think it is an ulcer, it looks more like a scar because it is just smooth and white, no mucus or cotton wool like stuff. Looks exactly like scar and that it what I thought it was until it started to get bigger.

How do I give him a salt bath??

Also when I put him into this QT tank do I just put him in there with no heater or filter? just a completely empty tank??

and sorry can't get a picture of him, my camera decided that it didn't wan to live any more and has stopped working!!!

I would put him in the QT tank immediately and get a small filter/heater later if you need it. My gourami lived happily for a long time with no heater. As long as your place is warm he should be good for a while. The point is to just get him out of the main tank asap. Your description sounds like fungus to me. I had fungus in my tank & didn't know what it was. After the first fish died, I saw another fish with the same symptoms, and another and another. Almost all of them died. I didn't have a QT tank. It only took a few days. Get him out of there asap!

Here is a very good writeup on bath treatments (I would recommend the Short-term and the QT): http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/VM037 (Roughly 4 tsp of Epsom Salt / gallon I think it is)

Also, be sure to do a large WC in ur main tank and monitor the other little guys for any signs of distress.

As for your QT, small water changes daily (10% or so) will take care of any issues that you may have with water quality and keep aeration up. The heat is you biggest issue - Try acclimating him to the temp of the QT tank 1st before dipping him in if you cannot match the temp to within 3-5 degrees (i.e. use a zip-lock baggy). :)

So I went to the LFS last night and got some anti internal bacteria medicatin. This is what they told me to get for him. but to my annoyance the lad in there said " Our dwarf Gouramis always come in with this problem and this is what we treat them with"

So they have sold me a poorly fish, I wa not impressed ad will take my business elsewhere next time.

The dwarf is now in its QT tank. he seems ok in there apart from the cat and the puppy trying their hardest to get him out of there. I have a spare heater that I might put in with him because my house is quite cold at the moment and I would n't want the little thing freezing to death.

So keep all finger and toes crossed for him.

Now I know that moonlight Gourami are not supposed to get this problem but one of mine is acting very strange. It keeps up wedging itself between the side of the tank and the filter facing upwards and just moves up and down against the side. Any idea what could be wrong with this one?

This could be a classic 'tell' for Itch, but if there are no physical signs it's hard to tell. Usually, a fish with Itch will rub against something at first and develop more spuratic and aggressive attempts as the Itch grows

It could just be that he's cold? You said you needed a new heater? What is the temp of your water?

I would efinately keep a very close eye on your tankmates...

Heater in main tank is working OK. can't remember what the temperature is but it is lovely and warm when I put my hand in there.

Would it do them any harm if I treated them for Ich before knowing for definate that thats what it is? He has no other signs of the diesease. I really don't want to have to start the tank all over again for the third time. I would like to catch it before they all get it.

if I caught your last description, and the 'infection' seems to have spread down the fish's lateral line, you might have hole in the head or head and lateral line erosion (HLLE). Typical in Discus I heard. Possibly due to stress, though exact cuases are unknown. The whitish portion on the head and along the lateral line will eventually slough off, leaving deep pits. No known exact cure (haven't seen one yet), but keeping excellent water quality helps the fish recover on its own, albiet, with noticeable scars.

Well unfortunately he went to fish heaven on Friday night. I got home and found him lying on the bottom of the QT tank, I thought he was dead so went to get him out but he started to move so I put him back and he lived for a couple of hours more and then gave up.

My Moonlight Gourami has now stopped rubbing himself in the corner of the tank so maybe he was just having a strange day that day.

Dwarf was definately hole in the head. it looked quite unpleasant when I got back on Friday and I'm quite glad that he died because he couldn't have been very happy like that
