gouramis tend to die from quickly and seem very susceptible to fast killing diseases. I believe health is a real issue with these fish in my experience with them.
If you are buying them at petsmart then taking them home you might make sure the water conditions are similar before you add the fish to the tank. If you are adding a ph decreasing chemical the pH in your tank might be much lower than that in the pet store's tank causing the fish to go into shock. Just a thought.
