My Gouramis have their "feelers" uneven. I suspect a fish to be nipping but I don't know which one. The gold dourami chases the opaline gouramis a lot. Can it be the puffers? I haven't seen the puffers chase anyone.

puffers are notorious fin nippers. i would DEFINITELY not keep them with gouramis. however, there's a good chance the other gourami is the guilty party in this case, as well.

but i would say get the puffers out of there! they don't chase per se, but they're vicious little guys well known as fin nippers. they're suited for species only tanks, not community setups.

I would not recommend puffers with anything that are relativly slow moving(gouramis) and have longer, wavy fins(gouramis!). I have dwarf puffers and good tank mates for them are fish that are quick movers ie. tetras, a few smaller barbs, etc. I have 3 dwarfs, 3 neons and 2 ottos in a 10 gallon planted and they do just fine...they did pick on the ottos when i first got them but they dont bother them anymore.

Ok, so dwarf puffers and gouramis should not be tankmates. But I like em both!
I hoped the tank was big enough for all of them. I guess i'll have to choose which to bring back.
thank you for your replies:sad

Dwarf puffers ARE NOT brackish, and will not survive in a brackish tank. There are many species of puffers that are FW, and knowing which is which is important.

They can be savage little buggers, though--I ended up moving everything but a rainbow shark, some bristlenose and kuhli loaches out of the tank with my puffers.

 I am confused, I read that for dwarf puffers, "Ideal tank mates include: Puffers, Barbs, Gouramis, Dwarf Cichlids, Sharks, Rainbowfish, Loaches, Plecos, and other scavenger Catfish." on www.liveaquaria.com
I am going to need some more reading before making a decision I will regret later.;)

There is more poor to bad puffer info on the web than good, the trick is to tell the difference. That note is one of the poor ones.

If you think of puffers as being basically messy and aggressive fish for species tanks, with some few exceptions, and many of them for single specimen tanks rather than housed with conspecifics you will be in a better starting place.

Anyone who talks about puffers as community fish without a lot of reservations may be feeding you a line.

RTR knows of what he speaks. After all, he wrote the "Introduction to Puffers" article :)

I'll keep em like that for now.
The only thing I am worried about is the gold gourami chasing my opalines all day. It got em all affraid, and it seems they are losing their colors too:(
