Please congratulate me on finaly persauading my parents to let me have my third tank! :D :D :D :D

The tank will have hillstream loaches in and I wondered whether the colour of gravel will matter. In my other two tanks the gravel is either natural coloured or light coloured sand. I was wondering if i could maybe go with bright red or blue gravel/sand or something like that to make a change?

Do the fish care about the colour?

Cangrats :)

BTW I kinda like colored gravel. Pick the opposite color of your fish and it'll bring out their color :) I used blue to bring out my gold snails (RIP)

Darker substrates are usually preferred because it brings out the colors of many fish. Brightly colored gravel also looks ugly and tacky IMHO.

the fish wont care but 2 weeks after you put it in the tank and decide you cant take it anymore...... its gonna be a lot harder to change

White - that sounds pretty cool. Also AquaGem, If i had red cherry shrimps witha blue gravel they would stand out quite a bit. that sounds cool too

Very cool. I also have bright decerations. I even have a glass bulb with a bunch of bubbles! Super cool. My snails looks so cute when they crawled on it. Needless to say I don't really go with the "natural" look. It may be tacky to some, but I like it :) cherry shrimp with blue gravel would look HAWT!!!

PS. Did you get my friend request?!

Some fish show strong color changes based on substrate color. I don't know about hillstreams, but I have some seminole killifish in a tank with white gravel; they are almost colorless. In a planted, dark substrate tank they have strong patterns.
