Kj5kb, if there is proper circulation at the bottom, it is not a terrible idea at all.
There was...UP!

This was a 75G tank with reverse flow undergravel filtration (RUGF) so the poo tended not to settle into the gravel, but get drawn toward the filters instead.

Another thought that occurs to me...

I have a 20 long with Pool filter sand; it has an HOB on the end (not the back). The intake is plumbed down to the opposite end of the tank. The current flows most of the 'gar-bahhhge' down to the far end...the sand stays pretty clean.

A similar approach would probably work well with a bare tank.

That...or litter train the goldfish.

:) NEVER add white quartz gravel to a goldfish tank!
That looked great for about 30 seconds after adding the fish...:yuck:

Great ideas... a lot to think about. I like the idea of black rock... so the slate is not a bad thought. I will be renting a tile saw in the near future... and could cut slate to fit. Are there any other rock tiles that are acceptable?

p.s. It's been four days now of 0 ammonia, and 0 nitrites. By jove, I think we done it! he he he he he And it is about time too!
