Guys, I want to clean the tank out, using something like a gravel vac but with a filter so I can just recycle the water back into the tank. I did a water change a few days ago but am not happy with how dirty it still is. Anyone know what I am talking about. I am looking for a gravel vac type thing that has a FILTER with it so I can filter the water and re-use it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Just because the water is filtered doesn't mean its clean. You'd have to make sure it was filtering out any bad pollutants that build up in the tank that we can't measure.

Nitrates aren't filtered out, even if the water was crystal clear the nitrate reading would still be the same or close to it. The only way to lower nitrates is with new water.

Its a good idea just not a feasible one.

Unless you filtered it through a RO unit, that might be one way to remove the unwanted.

that definitely wouldnt work, not even conceptually. it would take a very long time and with so much stuff in the water there would be a lot of waste water (even more than normal) and you would burn through membranes really fast. you would have to replace probably 90 percent of the water anyway because thats how much would be the waste water.

I think he just wants to get the solid waste out, and still does the proper water changes.

Might be able to use the magnum cannister filter, with the gravel vac attachment and micron filter.

would be the attachment,

I'd imagine it could be attached to any other cannister filter, not quite how simple that would be, or could use a dedicated magnum filter if you could justify the expense ;)

Only suggestion I would give would be to do the vacuuming before changing the water, just to take into account any particles that ended up on the water column as a result of the vacuuming.

I might just go with an undergravel filter system, anyone have any suggestions on a filtration system for a 50 gallon bow front tank?
