I'm setting up a 55 gal, and rather than buy gravel from the pet shop at such high prices, I went to just get a bag of pea gravel. Well I was looking for something dark colored and I ran across this crushed trap rock. Do you guys see any problem with using it? It is definatly smaller and more angular than what you can buy at the pet shop so I'm not completely confiadent in it. Any opinions are appricated.

What kind of fish will you be keeping? It's kind of hard to tell from the picture, but it looks like this gravel has very sharp edges....not a good thing if you plan on keeping catfish, loaches, or cichlids that like to dig.

I haven't really thought too much about what I'm going to keep just yet. But yes, it isn't smooth like gravel, but its not sharp like glass... its just crushed rock. Another thing, I do plan on having live plants, with this effect them too?

I would really consider what you will be stocking your tank with first. It seems a little premature, I know, but it will make things a lot easier in the end. Take a walk around you LFS and see what may interest you first. I have clown, burmeses, and yo-yo loaches, each one really like to dig in the gravel. My big tank has med sized gravel. We are in the process of slowly transferring into smaller gravel for the clowns as the current gravel does not allow them to dig. Sharp gravel will cut them. I would think that by the look of your picture that any fish grazing on the bottom for any left over food may cut themselves.
