I stopped in at Petsmart last night to pick up some algae wafers...my dogs had eaten them AGAIN!
I was pleasantly suprised to find the young lady that came to see what I needed very knowledgable and helpful. We talked for a while, and she showed me some freshwater puffers...just teeny babies they had gotten. They had PVC pipes for the knifefish to hide in, and they had a discus. Apparently this discus is the darling of a couple of guys in the department. they have him by himself, in a tank with a dedicated filtration system...clean his tank frequently, feed him frequently, and have his temp set higher. They have several fake plants in there for him, and he was hiding. From what I could see he looked great. I guess they have had him 4 to 6 months.
And to make my day complete..a young couple came by with their dogs, and one was a beautiful boxer girl..almost as pretty as mine. We stood and talked for a while, and their other dog started to drink out of the lower level of tanks :D Of course they stopped him. but it was funny.

My youngest daughter had interviewed at this Petsmart and they asked her if she had fish, and were interested when she said there were tanks at home, but then lost interest when she said they were mine. I told her next she needs to tell them what she knows..she has cleaned them, changed water, fed them and gets to listen to me talk about them. She ended up working at Subway tho...I'm glad they are looking for people that have fish and know how to take care of them.

Not here. The store in Davenport, IA, is by far the worst kept I've seen yet. Every live bearer in the place looks like its about to die and every tank has at least 2 dead fish in it. They just don't care here. Glad they do somewhere.

Fishyman..The Subway isn't IN the Petsmart...she didn't get the job there  I wished she would have so she could use her employee discount to get me fish and dog stuff.

Yeah, that's why I posted, this unfortunately seems to be the exception for chain fish stores instead of the rule, and as much as we bash on them, we should give credit where credit is due. It's the Petsmart in Peoria IL. UI think I did see one dead fish maybe, but it can happen. At least there weren't a half dozen in each tank.

The worst fish store in Peoria is a privately owned one called SuperPets. They have puppies too and I've heard some horror stories about their health too. The fish department is about enough to turn my eldest daughter into someone PETA would be happy to have.

If your in the area looking for fish, the place I really like to get fish at is a LFS in Pekin IL called Charlies. They are closed on Weds. If you want directions PM me. He has a great variety of fish. There are supplies that he doesn't carry, and it's a bit far to run when I just need food.

Every chain can have it's star stores. Heck, my Wal-Mart has a great fish dept. Just goes to show, I suppose. Also, as customers or, better yet, potential customers, our input is appreciated by managers. Retail is a nasty, cut throat business. If you've ever taken the time to call or even just ask to see a manager and explain what is wrong, you might be surprised by the results. They want your business. They need your business. If you come off as knowledgable while staying below the "nutcase/PETA" radar, you could have an impact on the lives of every fish that comes into that store and ultimately, in that chain from then on. Something to consider as responsible fish keepers...

Good point , Harlock. I was trying to talk the girl into putting the bettas into the other tanks instead of the awful cups. She did have a good answer about the fin nippers. They did have them displayed better so you could see all the fish instead of all bunched together on a shelf. Maybe that;s my project. I've seen the little partitioned containers that can go in the regular retain tanks, I would think that would be better. If nothing else, maybe they could switch to the bigger cups like Petco uses.
I haven't bought any fish there yet, but I might. I kinda feel like I owe it to Charlies because he's the little independant guy that does do a great job. It's just a drive to get there.

The Petsmart here in Calgary is awesome too. The lady who was working refused to sell me a fish the other day because she was concerned for the ghostknife I was also buying. I think she was being silly and sticky to store rules rather than really knowing, because I think they would have been alright. It was still nice to see her stick to her guns though. :)
