Okay, it's been more than 2 weeks since I cleaned my tank and I have had cloudy, green water ever since.

I took a water sample to be tested in a lfs for a second opinion. PH, Ammonia, Nitrates are all fine. He did find an exceptionally high Phosphate reading. He told me that would make it easier for algae to live in the tank, hence the green water. He gave me Algae destroyer and told me to wait 48 hours after treating, then change 40% and add Phos-Zorb. I folowed the instructions to the letter and I still have green cloudy water.

HELP!? :shark:

You should blackout your tank for around two days, and do a 50% water change after the blackout. Algae-Light=No Algae :)

I fixed my green water/algae problem by changing water, reduced length of lighting, and reduced feeding.

Thanks

Green water is not caused by high phosphates. It is caused by residual NH4 (such as disturbing a subtrate full of organics, overcleaning the filter). Once you have green water, you could waterchange until your hands fall off but it won't go away. You need to kill the algae either with a UV filter or with a blackout and then fix the source of NH4+ coming into the water. This residual NH4+ is not always picked up by a test kit specially during the green water algae bloom which would consume any ammonia in sight.

I am working on the black out as we speak.

Hi,

I have a problem with green water and I saw your post.... about the residual NH4. You said that using a UV filter or a black out, solves the question. But what about the source..How do you fix that? Vacuing the gravel.? Thanks. I am from Portugal
