Green Hair Algae

Doggone it. It's starting to get out of control. I manually remove it with every water change (it's down to once every two weeks because of my thesis schedule...I do my best).

I tried a 4-day blackout. My Cabomba started browning, so I aborted that plan. What should I do? Excel seems to adversely affect the Cabomba as well. The Vals? Well, whatever. I don't really mind if they die off. They're a mess anyways.

What do you all recommend? The Co2 seems to helpt he plants grow, but does nothing for the algae (it's a Bio-Yeast Co2 system - the commercially sold one with a DIY yeast solution replaced once a week).

I'm starting to get frustrated. It's taking over my tank.

Is this the long, green single strand-algae? I had a real bad problem with that. It got to the point that I was removing it by hand and by twirling it around a toothbrush, like spaghetti. The only thing that worked for me to control it was instituting a regular fertilizer regime (Seachem, affordable because the tank is small), overdosing with Excel for a few weeks. and cutting back on the photo-period. If Excel is deadly to your plants, I'd recommend sticking with manual removal, frequent water changes, and a 3-4 day total blackout.

How much light and what kind of plants are in the tank?
