Excel gave the plants the Carbon source they needed, and along with your lighting, they probably ran out of nutrients, hence the problems. Its happens a lot with first time CO2 users, the plants grow so fast until they exhaust their nutrient supply, then have terrible deficiencies and growth.

So just using flourish wont cut it right? You have to have npk correct or the work continue to grow?
Yes, I'm a casual fertilizer & bad things crop up. I know it'd be better with a consistant fert program.

all coming from the same source so its the same thing. Just one may find buying something prepackaged easier than going out looking for things like fleet enema, nu-salt and what not
If your lighting is at the medium point then you would need co2 and ferts to keep things at balance. But generally at medium light one would want to have a variety of plants instead of one anubia and some moss. Variety/quantity will reduce your chances of getting algae.
