I saw one of these in my LFS yesterday and it was a sweet looking fish. I've heard that they can be a bit tricky to keep? What are their requirements and what fish would they be compatible with?

they are picky eaters and usually recommended for an established tank.
they seem to prefer live food or if your lucky they will eat frozen if it's moving.

usually a good idea to keep pod available.

They are very peaceful fish, other fish won't touch or harass them as they are toxic, they need abundant amounts of live rock as they will not eat anything that is dead, hence the reason that most have sunken bellies in the lfs. You cannot mix males unless you have a large enough tank. Generally in a small tank you need a remote source of pods, such as a sump.

To add to what NoSkimmer has said, i always recomend waiting a while to ensure that your system has matured enough to allow a great colony of pods to form to a big enough size that the fish does not wipe them out within a few months..

Pods, of course, can also be brought from many online suppliers aswell to add to an existing colony..

Thanks for the info. I really do want to try and keep one. I think I just need to wait and add it after I've had an established colony of pods and possibly a fuge to grow them in like has been said.

Thanks

I recently bought a green spotted mandrin myself and they are the cutest little things. She is in a 135 gallon tank and she quite a belly on her now.
My tank is 5 months old but was over run with pods so may that they would cover my glass even during the day time.Since I have added her I have seen no change in the amount of pods but I know she is eating well so I think she will be ok.
I agree 100% with Niko and no skimmer,,they give great advice.
