green mandarin goby

yea mandarins are a bit tricky and i would agree with freddy they arnt good for a beginner or a newer or small tank. if u get lucky the will eat frozen foods like mine do in my tank and they ones i sell at my work but usually they dont.

Mine so far haven't touched any frozen baby brine, mysis, arctic pods or cyclopeze.

mine doesnt even touch baby brine.... i flood the tank with it every once in a while and he shows no interest. she did suck up a frozen blood worm when i got him in the store. but she was mighty skinny then... i didnt get her expecting her to eat anything, i just wanted to make sure she was healthy enough to go after food.
now she is fat fat FAT!

thats to bad have u tried using some form of a garlic with the food? also how bout mixing live brine with frozen mysis

I do use garlic extract with my food, but they won't touch it. I'm nervous about using live brine because I read they can introduce problem bacterias or viruses.

So far both mandarins are eating something in there. They look o.k. and while they're not plump, they're not starving. I have about 165lbs of LR in the display tank and about 20lbs or so in the sump/refugium. The sump refugium was started in January of this year and has lots of bugs, but the LR in the display tank has been going since early 2000. I wish they ate speghetti worms. I have tons of those.

Any ideas on how to increase the amount of bugs in the display tank? I was thinking about swapping LR from the ref to the dp and then back again. What do you think, Germanman?

sounds like a logical way to go really to get some transfered over...Can you not go out and buy a good tub of pods and split between sump and fuge...that way, the mandarin has new live food and the pods in the fuge has a good boost to start multiplying and growing for future...

Just an opinion of course...

Will leave it to Germanman now.....

yea a swap out wold work fine as long as u have lots of pods in with the rock u swap in. sometimes it takes awhile for them to even consider the frozen. live is usually fine but it depends on where u get it. also rinsing it under fresh water will kill off some of the bad stuff as well. maybe try it without garlic for a bit. ive found that feeding live mixed with thawed frozen soaked in the same solution for about an hour will sometimes get them to start eating the frozen food give that a try thats how i get them to eat frozen at my work.

I'll try the mixed routine you suggested. Makes sense to me and I'll try the swap in the mean time. Thanks, G

Niko,
I'll check around and see if any of my lfs' have the live copes for sale. I did use some tigger pods once, but they were $20.00 for a small bottle. It said there were 500 in there, but I doubt it. What I really need is to find a lfs with a large refugium and ask for some cheato. I'll be there's some in there.
Thanks guys for the good advice,
Tom

Hi I've got a female green mandarin in my 14 gal nano. I have about 25 lbs of LR in there. shes been going steady for a month now, but she might still be starving. She is very active and eats quite well, but looks a bit lean. anyway i really try my best to accomodate her. Would be disapointed if she doesnt make it. If she doesnt perish in the next month, she'll be a keeper.:)
