Green Puffer?

I'm placing this in "freshwater" with some trepidation as this fish was purchased today at Wal*Mart today in freshwater and labeled as a green puffer. The little guy appears to have ich and my husband said that they would just let him die and we had to try and save him.

Can anyone verify the species?

My experience is mostly with goldfish although I've done a bit of saltwater in the past. At the moment, "Puffy" is in QT. He ate some crab this evening and is active.

From what I've been able to ascertain thus far, malachite green should be avoided for treatment and at some point; he should be moved to brackish or saltwater.

Knowledgeable advice or referrals to good links appreciated.

raise the temp and add salt. pufferpunk is a great source and the puffer forum in his sig will help also. i have one of them and they are loads of fun.
 
Thanks for the information and links. It looks like he is a GSP (Green Spotted Puffer). I found this good link over on the Puffer Forum.

He likes to eat, so that is a good sign. :) The tank that he is in is well established and fully cycled. I'm going to start switching it over to brackish gradually as the article suggested.

Now, I'm not so sure on the ich. He seemed to have small spots on the tail but they really don't show up much in the photos. The tail and fins were clamped in the store and he seems more relaxed now that he's not in with other fish.

It steams :angryfire: me that this was sold as a freshwater fish with no care sheet. I have no problem with switching him over but I imagine that most of these guys die to lack of knowledge and improper housing.
