I'm really interested in breeding green severum, I want to find a logical way to support my habit. Has anyone done this or had luck with this? Is there anything that you would recommend instead? I guess what I'm really looking for is something that's not super common, and that I could breed with my limited knowledge. I didn't want to do guppies, betas or mollys because it seems that pet stores are overrun with them anyway. Thanks!

Love that fish - was thinking of starting a tank of them. I'll be your first customer if you are successful in breeding. Attached is a strain of the Green Severum that i saw for sale recently - really cool looking.

Green severum's acctually are pretty common so if your looking to make money off of something I would not breed them. If your just doing it for the hobby of it then they are a great fish. I would keep them in no smaller than a 55 gallon but 75 would be even better and you would probably want to plan on 2-3 55 gallon grow out tanks depending on if you plan to raise each brood to a sellable size. The grow out tanks should not have powerfilters but some sort of internal sponge filter or something like this as to not suck up the fry. It is also probably easier to leave the tanks bare bottom as its easier to clean them and the fry will not get stuck in the substrate. If you do use something I would go with sand but most breeders use bare bottom tanks. Most info on breeding them is readily available on the web if you want to know about brood size and other aspects of the spawn.

That is a beautiful severum that you have pictured. Do you have any ideas of something that would make a good breeder for me? Perhaps a more unusual strain of severum? Gold isn't seen nearly as often as the green, around here at least. Thanks for the link. I read your information and it was very much in line with other things I've read on the net. I currently have 2 green severums, both males I believe though. The larger is about 4", the smaller about 3". Very cool fish, great personality.

My green Severums have been really easy to breed. I have fry at least once a month, the fry get eaten shortly after they are able to swim though.

if you want a more uncommon sev - try the emerald sev - I think that is what is pictured in donfenk's post actually. they are really pretty.

if you dont have your heart set on sev's, and want to raise a rarer fish, try Honduran red points - easy to breed as convicts, and much more attractive.
another choice would be red rainbow cichlids - I have only seen those on aquabid, never in stores...
