Never heard of wood causing a rise in kH. It will soften and acidify the water to some degree due to tannins, but that should lessen as they leach out over time.

You're right it's the pH that's effected by tannins not the kH. Oh, my poor aching chemistry head. It just doesn't pearl like it used to.
