green water for the first time ever!

the idea of buying another expensive piece of equipment for somethign that like this is a bit disturbing to me. I've never had to deal with this in about 8 years of keeping tanks. Seems like there should be a cause and solution that doesn't involve a major purchase.

Do these UV filters have other purposes as well?
 
yes, i share the same sentiment about adding new, unexpected hardware. you could try what i did--water change 2x a week until the green water runs its cycle. took me about 3-4 weeks but it did clear up and vanished.
 
No need to do a large water change with Clarity. Just add Clarity, wait for your water to clear up and change the filter media that captured all the crap it filtered out and then do a normal water change.

No need to go out and spend $40 to $60 on a UV system when you can just add a couple cap fulls of Clarity..

I jacked up my Co2 to the yellow and had the same problems.
 
if co2 was the difference it is probably the problem. i hate adding chemicals so have no comment on whether or not clarity will clear it up. seems like another bottle of cure all to me. plus clarity isn't found in nature so i doubt it's a viable long term solution.

uv sterilizers do work for sure but if you were able to keep a balance for that long i wouldn't spend the money either. they do have other purposes also as you suspected. if you subject the water close enough for long enough in a single pass they can kill protozoans.
 
Green water will keep growing.
I used Clarity a few times to clear up a issue I was having with a root tab that was dissolving to close to the surface. I was able to clear up my water, save my plants and after removing the root tabs it didn't come back.
Nice to have clear water when you are trying to figure out what the problem is instead of having cloudy water that is getting worse every day when your trying to figure out what is going on.
Even after you figure out what the problem is, you still need to get rid of the cloudy water.
I used this product with shrimp, snails, fish and plants and no changes to any behavior, breathing, color or feeding and is definitely a wonderful safe product. Just because it comes in a bottle doesn't mean that is bad or not safe.
Seachem does allot of research and it is one of the best company's out there for fish products.
 
i did not and will not argue any claims about clarity. i used seachem products for plants for a while myself. i switched to dry ferts though. all's going much better now. i also am now testing prime and it's growing on me. i have also not had to use clarity as i have a uv sterilizer. automatic feeders also to keep my heavy hands and extra phosphates out of my tanks.

i did give and state that it indeed was my opinion and doubts. neither of which debated whether clarity works or is safe. jag, i am sorry if i offended you and would like to say that i have no reason to doubt anything you've written thus far.
 
I wasn't offended, I was just making the statement because many people fear that if something comes in a bottle it's not safe for fish. Just wanted to clear that up for some so people don't push it to the side as not being a option.
When I had problem, I was never once told to use this product and everyone always said not too just because it's in a bottle and what it does.
I finally had to test it for myself with doing my own common sense research, I tried it and it works better then I could imagine. Even if you don't have green water, if you water is not crystal clear, this product will make it Diamond Clear.
The water will be so clear it will almost look UN natural

People will recommend $50 to $100 filtration system before they would recommend a $15 bottle of a hassle free product..
I think the products are very high priced, but with Seachem, you get what you pay for.

Dry Fertilizers are the best way to go, I used them and was very pleased.
 
Ditto on the dry ferts. Way cheaper in the long run. I've been running 2 high tech planted tanks for 3 years or so on the same bags of dry ferts.
