Green Water Killing MegaThread!

Few have it 2x:cool:
If so, you have several issues occurring.
Lack of nutrients is one, lack of CO2 is another and ..........

And I do not see any info on lighting, but......I bet it's high as well.

Low light + good CO2, plenty of nutrients.........
Then such things like algae are much more minor.
Then you spend more time gardening, which likely was the original goal.

I'm by far not the only person that has long suggested this.

absolutely, tom. that's why i went searching through his posts for answers.

what i found...

he WAS using 4X 65W pc bulbs (i think half daylight, half 50/50)
upon your suggestion he cut that down to 2X 65w a while back

he WAS also targeting 10ppm nitrates using pmdd and running diy co2

then there's chemsorb... i have no knowledge of that product personally, maybe someone else can critique that???

and there was "aquarium" salt

while we're here... i believe he's using 1 filstar xp3 on a 75 gal. ... any opinions on that? i don't think it'd have anything to do with his algae, since i, personally use a lot less in comparison w/out issues... but might as well get it out there and see what the consensus is.

DJDRZ... your first line of defense against any cyano is enough nitrates.

I feel so honored to have it twice...
The lighting is 2x65W 6700/10000 bulbs. A while back you recommended I turn off one bank of 2x65W (its a 4x65W fixture). I think the light is good (130 W over 72G bowfront, 22"deep).I have been dosing to ~10ppm NO3 with fertz, and DIY CO2. I think I finally have realized it is the CO2. I am looking for general concurrence on that. If it is, then my next thread will be putting together a pressurized system. :headbang2:

Well, DIY CO2 on a larger tank, high light...........I think nuttrients are minor issue.

Get a CO2 gas tank.
Or run the UV all the time till you do.

You spent the $$$ on a larger tank, filters and then got high light..........but went all cheap on CO2.

This is the opposite of what you should have done.
Smaller tank, high grade CO2 and cheapo light. It's understandable.......but folks in the know have long mentioned this issue with new folks, they do not see the utility and do not listen/read that part.

More must be better, unless it's CO2 or nutrients........

It's not just you either, I'm not singling anyone out, it's a general problem newer folks have.

Here's my 60 cube:

I have black flourite sand.
I use 96W of light, or 1.5 W/gal and the distance is about 1 meter from the light to the bottom of the tank......quite a distance.

CO2 is closely watched and a gas tank.

Fish load is high.

Filter is a sealed Wet/dry and an additional Rio 800.

Dosing 2x-3x a week, fish fed 2-3x a day(also "dosing").
Water change, about 70% once a week.

Very little work.

No algae issues.

I sell about 50 RCS once a month for 20$ and about 50$ worth of hair grass belem and 50$ worth of Bolbitus once every 2 months. I do not prune but once a month or two. Not much labor really.

So the tank makes 140$ and the energy cost offset that by say 25$ a month perhaps, likely a little less. So I'm still ahead.

I was running the UV all the time, the bulb burnt out and I think that started the whole mess. I am planning on the pressurized CO2 now...

Good idea, GW BTW has no impact on the plants.........just looks bad, but does no harm to the plants really.

So such issues can wait till you fix the root of the issue.

CO2 needs care and good use, never rush with it.
Slow, methodical...........adjustments......... impatience leads to dead fish, algae etc.

More light, makes issues more likely.
