Green water, need help

While I would do things just a tad different, DjLen knows his stuff and I would take his advice alone for now and try it his way. See how things work out after a month or better yet 2 months and adjust from there.

I will look into the CO2, i was under the impression that my gh and kh were 2 low.

thanks for the help.

If your kH is 3.0 - 3.5°kH it is fine for injecting CO2. If it would make you more comfortable, pick up some crushed coral at your LFS, put it into a nylon filter bag and then into your filter, or hide it behind a rock in the tank.
In about 1 - 2 weeks it will start to buffer your water's kH up. It's slow to act, but a couple of tbsps. of it in a bag will last for a long time.

i do have crushed coral in my tank already.

do you think another black out is in order?

would you care to recomend a pressureized co2 system, keep in mind i have a eheim wet/dry 2227 filter, I do not know if this will effect the co2 or not.

thanks for taking the time to help

I have another question, i set up a 125 gal tank at my new office, I have 250 watts running over it right now, I can up that to 300. i trippled the same doseing as my 40 gal, I have an over flow, and a homemade wet dry filter. The hood has several small fans built into it to move air through the hood to disapate heat.

there is a ton of surface adjutation.

I have a little algea growing on the drift wood and glass, but the plants have really grown, (about 2.5" in 3 weeks)

I can see how the EXCELL will get kinda expensive at the rate that i need 2 dose that tank. (it is not nearly as heavily planted as the 40) but even just useing the recomendations 60ml at each wc, 15 ml per day.

I have thought about setting the pump on a timer, and have a co2 injection on a timer, shut the pump off for 7 out of the 12 hour photo period to let the co2 do its thing w/0 having to compete with the trickle filter.

Is seven hours enough?
am i going to run into trouble with only having my filter running for 17 hours per day?

thanks again for your help

Rex sells two nice units....one with a solenoid and one without:
http://rexgrigg.com/./sale.html

These are a bit expensive, but he uses good quality stuff. You would still need a 10 or 20 lb. CO2 bottle. Try to find a used one because most places swap bottles when you bring in the empty one rather than filling yours.
Wet/Dry filters are not the best for CO2 and I don't have enough experience with them to advise on the best way to dampen the surface agitation. Hopefully someone who does will respond for you.

Here's another very reliable regulator similar to the ones I use:

On the other hand, if you keep the wattage over both tanks where it is you can seek a nice balance for plants/light/nutrients and have a nicely planted tank. CO2 is a great equalizer, but there are many folks out there with 3 wpg, doing a nice job without it.

I would like to comment on the Wet/Dry filter, and say DO NOT SHUT IT OFF! Even if you shut it off for just a few hours each day, when the bacteria that are on the "EHFIsubstrate" (or whatever media you are using) run out of water or oxygen you will have a die-off and this could send you through chronic "mini-cycle" problems as the biofilter is constantly stressed. The best course of action would be to use that filter on another tank after acclimating a new filter for a month or at least 2 weeks on this tank. Use a standard canister filter in it's place. Also, even during the CO2 "on-time" you would want plenty of circulation in the aquarium to evenly distribute the CO2 while not aggitating (excessive ripples or splashing or bubbling) the surface of the water.

yeah, i was kinda thinking along the same lines. The 2227 eheim from what i have read my not be a problem with CO2 inj because it it air tight (except for the vent) the way this thing works is to drain the canister every min or so and fill it back up, im not sure exactly how much ajutation this would cause. there are never any air bubbles shooting from the return

My 125 gal had a homemade wet/dry with 8 gal of bio-balls in 2 5 gal buckets. I think the trickle effct would cause big time CO2 loss

I am probably going to get co2 inj on the 40, i may put it on the 125 gal 1st and see if i can get the co2 at a decent lvl, just to experiment
