Grins' 55g Reef

Nice linkia!

What an icky day for the tank. Icky not ichy by the way.

Woke up and the temp had spiked up to 89-90. **** heater malfunctioned. Poor shrimp didn't make it and a nassarius was trying to make a meal of him.

Tried to make the best of the day by doing some major work on the stand. My son was finally convinced by a local reefer to listen to me about bolting the base cabinet to the wall and adding some shims to the front of the stand for safety and keeping the level perfect. Part of the pain in this was it meant empting the tank of water, rock, and livestock.

So everything was removed and put in qt tank, bins, buckets etc. The bottom cabinet was attached to the wall and then the rocks replaced (of course they didn't go back in the same way..they never do huh?). Water back in, fish back in, corals back in. Heater from the water mixing tub relocated to the tank.

Then my son notices something. Well actually he jumped back yelling. He was shocked. I thought he was faking. I was practically swimming in the tank trying to duplicate it and couldn't get it to. An hour later he finally convinced me there was an issue when I felt a little zap too.

After much trial and error we finally isolated the issue(s). The Koralias. UGH. So did some searching and the numbers on ours match the ones that they had this issue with. So we'll be contacting them when they're open.

So freaking weird that there wasn't an issue before but now there is. My fish are both acting well, starfish seems fine. I was worried about the featherduster for a bit because it wasn't reacting but seems to be fine now. Zoas look good and so does the monti cap. The pagoda cup is hiding and I'm waiting for the hammers and pearl bubble to decide it is safe to come out. The bali green and birdsnest are looking like prissy stuck up sticks and not giving me any feedback yet.

I've certainly had better tank days. Trying to look at the bright side I did get some rocks moved the way I had been considering and now I can get my son to continue with the cabinetry and take some photos.

R.I.P. little Scampi.

That sucks, Grins.
For those who don't know, the Koralia 2 and Koralia 3 with production batch numbers 644, 651, 703 and 707 (on label sticker at top of pump) are the recalled pumps.

Well, on an upside, Grins, you have isolated a potential deadly condition.

Sorry to hear about that, lady...

I don't keep a heater in my tank in the summertime to avoid such things. I've had about 5 different heaters malfunction on me over the last year or so...don't know what it is about them...with the freshwater tanks, i never really had any problems...but the salt seems to kill them.

I think, before winter, i'm going to invest in an externally tstated unit...see how that works.

Good luck with the rebuild. I lost my shrimps a while back and it kind of upset me as well...almost like my shrimp more than my fish. ;)

Grins: beautiful ricordea, really like the color.

Sorry to hear about your problems Grins and has made me purchase a titanium grounding rod.. But like bishop said its good that your isolated a potentially bad situation.
