grow out tank

I also use a 10 gallon for fry with just a heater and a sponge filter. It is the cheapest and easiest way to go.

I also use a 10 gallon with sponge filter. I do water changes more often b/c I feed more to put on size, bigger is always better but use what you can. At 1" is where you need to start to think of moving them to another tank or to the LFS.

They start in a 3.5 gallon with a sponge filter.
Heavy high protein feeding multiple times (5-6) crushed flake and plankton powder daily with a water change daily until they move up to the 10 gallon with a large hydro sponge.

Then the feedings drop to 3 times a day and water changes go every second day.

They then goto the 20 long. 3 feedings a day. Twice high protein (plankton powder) once a green flake. water changes twice a week.

Then the final step. A 33 gallon with two feedings a day. High protein (food varies daily, frozen, flake and pellet) and veggie (green flake) water changes once a day.

They are ready for the store when they reach almost 3 inches. Although the store will take them at 2 inches. I have found however that the price difference I get per fish unit between 2 and 3 inches is great enough that it pays for me to keep them that time that it takes for them to grow the extra inch.
