i was just wondeirng if there are tips on growing certin types of algae...
i know that the purple and red algaes need certin types of condition to grow best... or so i've heard... what are they if u know... thanks...

For red/purple coralline algae, the most important parameters are calcium and alkalinity. Keep Ca about 400, alkalinity above 3 mEq/L, and you should get decent growth.

I tested my alk yesterday for the first time using a Salifert test kit. My #s came back dkH=5.8, meq/L=2.06. My calcium (red sea test) always averages 400 to 450. I know my cal. is good but what about the alk? I have read the articles from Farley and I still am not sure. TIA.

It's definitely low. I think of 2.5 as bare minimum, and above 3 is much better. Are you dosing anything right now?

I only dose calcium. Maybe a cap and 1/2 and that's only when I remember too. Maybe a couple of times a week. Probably longer.
What should I be dosing with to raise my alk? I think I could use baking soda but I need somebody who knows what they are doing to tell me that. Maybe just be on the safe side and dose B-ionic? I don't have a clue how to rectify this. TIA
