Growing java moss on windowsill??

I know this is an older thread but I just wanted to know why someone mentioned to add gravel or a sponge into the cup with the java moss...

will any type of moss work like this?

Will it grow faster this way than say in a low light no CO2 tank?

That way it has something to latch on to. mine grow better attached to something than free floating.

all moss's have different growth characteristics. I imagine that most will be able to grow in a jar on a windowsill.

mine grows fastest on the windowsill, but it depends on how much sun your area gets.

there's obligate aquatics, marginal, floaters, terrestrial, epiphytic, lithophytic and more. as well there's crosses in between and many can be forced to grow outside of their geological niche. it's best to ask about something specific when the time comes. although, i think it is safe to say it'd be harder to find one that wouldn't work than one that would.

most plants should grow faster emergent or terrestrially but there are exceptions. riccia definitely grows faster floating, imo. but it's a heck of a lot easier to keep under control than floating or submersed growth.

alright to be more specific...I have

Riccia
Flame moss
Java moss

All of which I would like to grow more of, as it seems to be slow going in my low light tank, I was hoping the window sill would be better with natural light...

Which side of the house? Morning sun or afternoon?

Weekly water changes or just top ups? Tank water, conditioned tap or plain tap water?

Thanks!!

riccia... float it. ime it grows much faster that way.
java... take a handful of sphagnum moss, soak it, squeeze it out till it's not sopping wet but still barely able to drip, put it in a container and top with moss. i've done this in a sammich baggy taped to a window and it works well. some shade is probably required but i'd split it up into 3 or so containers in various windows to see which one does best for you.
flame... not sure, haven't tried yet.
