One thing I noticed in the tub-o-java that I have is that it's odorless. The java seems to keep the water very clean. I change the water out every so often to try to get the snails out. I also have some small crypts and java fern pieces in there too but they just sort of remain the same... no growth. I don't use ferts and it all gets little light. The moss grows anyway.
