The main point of my post was that this couldn't possibly be the only thing that's being done regarding the water testing. As usual, when viewing anything through the lense of the media you only see a very tiny, often biased, slice of the whole.

So if they where doing this with another fish you wouldent care?

Here you go, the favoritism for "cute" animals has begun already. New radicals in the making.

I would care about any fish being subjected to that, I think it is just cruel. Just that it happens to be my personal favorite fish, thats just a double insult to me.

I, too, live just outside Edmonton. And, quite frankly, I wouldn't stick my big toe into the river without updating my tetanus shots first. I don't see an issue with using the fish for testing water quality...at least they are doing some testing before dumping the water into the river. The wastewater they are testing has already been treated to a certain extent. There are coastal cities (like Victoria, BC) that don't even do that, and dump raw sewage directly into the ocean. How's that for an experiment on habitat and wildlife?
