gsp and figure 8 puffer

You can start right now, they both need brackish. Raise the sg .002 weekly, so you don't kill the bacteria.

Do you have them in the same tank? The GSP will need a high salinity as it gets older whereas the F8 will stay at low end brackish. Also, the GSP needs at least 30 gallons and the F8 needs at least 15gallons... just something to keep in mind :)

Also, I think you are the member who was also getting a dwarf puffer?...
If you want any info on the different puffers, thepufferforum.com is a wonderful place to learn about puffers!

i had to take them off a friend who had no one else who would take them

i know they require different salinity so i was going to start working toward low end brackish for the figure 8

what would be a good equilibrium for them right now? they are about an inch, i want to go to a bit below the max for the figure 8 so the gsp's (2) won't be too stressed until i can find a home for either species and accomadate acoordingly

I'm trying to find salt to buy, i think i'm going to get instant ocean because I've heard thats the best and have that at my work

now my question is won't it take a really long time to reach 1.005 if i only add .002 per week?

how much salt is normally put in a marine tank, i.e. 1 cup per gallon where as brackish is 1/2 cup or 2-3 tbsp?? I'm trying to find the answer on my own but can't get a direct answer

if you use instant ocean, an 1/8th of a cup per gallon will give you about 1.005.

i would just do water changes as normal with water mixed to 1.005.. since you aren't change all of the water it will slowly increase.

brackish fish are extremely tolerant of salinity changes. some may disagree, but i believe you should be able to just drop them into your new salinity with no problem. in the wild, the salinity is changing constantly due to storms and tides. however, it is said that you need to change the salinity slowly for the bacteria's sake, rather than the fish's - too big a change in the salinity will kill off the bacteria and start a cycle.

k, i was just concerned with the cost of the salt, 1/8 of a cup doesn't sound too too bad if i do weekly 15% of so, what would u say would be appropriate speed then to not get bacteria kill off, should i just do the really slow acclimation? it'd save money and they are still behaving normally as it is in the freshwater so they don't appear too stressed

i would replace the water you take out with 1.005 water.. that will slowly bring it up for you..

like if you mix 80% 1.000 water and 20 % 1.005, you will get 1.001 water.. then the next time you would be mixing 80% 1.001 water with 20% 1.005 which will bring it up a little more.. if you want to acclimate faster than that you will need to mix the new water higher than 1.005..

I just tested my water with a hydrometer when I raised the sg for my gsp. All of those percentages and math just confuse me :) Just make sure you do it slowly because killing off the bacteria would be bad. I think what trancefusion said should work though.

well instant ocean says 1/2 cup of salt in a gallon of water will make it 1.021. So, assuming that is accurate that would mean:

1/8th cup: 1.00525
1/4th cup: 1.0105
3/8th cup: 1.01575

hydrometers are pretty inaccurate. i wouldn't worry about it too much though. i have had a bunch of brackish critters (mudskippers, fiddlers, ghost shrimp, bumblebee gobies, figure 8) and i really think they are all quite tolerable of a variety of salinities..

just start replacing freshwater with brackish when you do your water changes and dont think about it too hard..
