ok my GSP has went through some tank changes lately. I've replaced the gravel with Crushed Coral and added some decorations for him to hide under. what i have noticed is that the white on his belly has became very dark. It turns that color when he is sleeping but use to go away as soon as he would wake up, when the lights came on. Is there something wrong with him? my tank specs are as follows: 29gallon with a emperor 400 bio wheel, penguin 660 powerhead attached to an undergravel filter. Ammonia 0, Nitrite 2.0ppm, Nitrate 5ppm, PH 7.8, SG 1.009, Temp 77.

he does a lot of "hiding" since i've added the decorated tree stump (penplex). the nitrite is up and i've done many many water changes to lower it. i didn't use his for a cycling fish, i used bio-spira freshwater and marine, but i just can't get the nitrite down as of yet. i think the culprite was some Anacharis plants that i think were dying because of the salt, so they were removed this morning. but the nitrite has been that amount for over 2 weeks now, so i don't think it would be the cause. i've been doing water changes about 30% probably 5 times a week. any suggestions on my GSP????

You need to daily changes at the minimum, and possibly larger than you are doing if you expect the puffer to survive the recycling of your tank - they have very poor resistance to ammonia or nitrite. The nitrite need to be undetectable or barely detectable at all times.

waffenss, hope you dont mind me gettin info from your post but maybe it will help you too!
i believe RTR also belongs to the puffer forum and i think he/she knows what they are doin!
i seem to be having the same problem trying to get my nitrite down to complete 0 and was wondering how to get it down that low other than water changes cause it dont seem to be getting it done for me either! could there be something else going on causeing the nitrite to stay up some?
btw RTR.....i almost got everything separated like you guys suggested!

oh and waffenss....i have read that GSP's as well as F8's alot of times change to darker colors when sleeping due to some process called washing out which was also from RTR in another post if i am correct! mine do it all the time as well!
