Guess what I got for Christmas? (not good)

BTW, in my original post, I said I had 10 guppies left, which was true, but while in qt, one of the females had babies. Hence 20 guppies left :-)

Prime does handle chloramines...pretty sure it has for years...

I was just mentioningit because I looked at my previous bottle of primer and it didn't take out chloramines, and the fish club here in OK made sure to let us all know they were adding chlormines to the water, so I assumed some primers didn't remove them. it never hurts to check though.

Congrats on the babies! :D a ray of hope at the end of the tunnel eh? haha

Good deal..nice info for sure. My comment was in relation to SeaChems "Prime" water conditioner.

A light at the end of the tunnel indeed! I have finished all my wc, on all the tanks. Here is what I did in case anyone wants to know:

Day 1: qt survivors and removed dead fish.
*there was a day in between because it was christmas
Day 2: wc on small tanks with surviving fish
*Waiting on python at this point
Day 4: Python arrives, another set of wc on the hospital tanks, removal of continued losses including my cory cats. No more corys left :-(
*Waited another day because my B-day was the 30th
Day 6: BIG wc on 55. 75%, then re-fill & trim plants, gravel vacuumed, then another 75% wc. refilled. Tested after an hour. ammo-0, nitri-0, nitra-0. Did an additional 50% wc, just to be sure. Let it come to temp (82 F) Added in remaining guppies and new blue and ivory brigs.
Today (Day 7): Did a 30 % wc in the 55, all readings normal, all fish healthy and well, snails cruising all over.
On Hospital tanks (2 10 gallon tanks), 50 % wc & refill.
On 100 gallon, 75% wc with deep gravel vacuume, and refill, another 50% with additional gravel vac and glass cleaning, refill. A third wc at 50%, netted large particulates and refilled. Testing normal. Params all perfect. Waited for temp to raise (83 F), added 4 remaining chichlids and tinfoil barbs back in. Everyone is healthy and doing great. I also did another 25% on both hospital tanks after moving the fish back to the 100 and the 55. So far it has been about 3 hours since the 100 got the fish and about 24 hours since the 55 got the fish. All params normal. Fish are doing very well. I am continuing to watch them like a hawk. Since the female guppies went into the 55, 2 have given birth. I now have about 30 babies, all doing very well. I will move the babies to the 10 gallon tanks to be culled and separated once sex is able to be determined. Made Snello :-)

Tomorrow's plan: Test all tanks. If any ammo, 25% wc's on all tanks. I probably will do the wc's anyway just to be safe.

Thank you all for your help and advice. I have several items on the way: 1 gallon Seachem Flourish Excel, lighting for the 100 and both 10 gallons, media for my Fluval 404 and my Cascade, prefilters so no guppies or snails get sucked into the canister filters. Fluval going on 100, in addition to the 2 hob's. Cascade going on 55, in addition to the hob. My plan is to get all the tanks super filtered and to watch my feeding schedule and how much I put into the tank. My new tank maintenance is going to be Mondays and Saturdays. I am going to pay particular attention to testing on a regular basis and watching my equipment and how it is handled. I will post pics once the water clears up, it is still a little cloudy because of all the wc's and the gravel vacs. I will try to get good photos, but again, my camera sucks. So far, no problems and I am so thankful that all of you responded and helped me. This site in really priceless. Thanks to all of you. If there is anything you want to know or any advice, it is more than welcome.

"Primer(s)" refer to paint, Prime is a brand of dechlorinator...other than dechlorinator, you might call it a water conditioner...but never a primer. Just FYI ;)

Hmm, chloramines have been added to the water supply for over a decade in most places...the thing about chloramine is it cannot be "gassed out" like chlorine, it definitely needs to be neutralized with dechlorinator, otherwise it will effectively cause ammonia to register, which we all know is deadly to fish.

I haven't read your last post Maribeth (got a quiche in the oven...it will be done any minute now :)) but it sounds like ordering the filter was a super smart move. I truly think it WAS something in the water, because contamination not related to painting, pesticides or aerosol (air fresheners and such) is just not very common. A little soap residue or a little cooking grease, the ordinary sorts of stuff, is probably not going to kill your fish in such a drastic way. Best of luck to you with your new filter, I think you will really enjoy having it for your drinking and cooking use as well!

Okay, this may be an incorrect theory, but perhaps the tank shut down in the night? As in, maybe the power went out and came back on, but it was too late for some of the fish? This is just the way my head works.

That's the single worst Christmas Present I've ever heard...

The filter works great, and the water tastes crisper and cleaner. I did all the wc's with the filtered water and the water is crystal clear. I am pretty glad I did order that filter. I believe it must have been something in the water as well. I will still be upping my maintenance because I do not what to lose any more fish. :-) Thanks!

I thought that at first, but all the clocks were right and none of the equipment was off. So, it def was not a power outage. It was the water I believe. It was the worst Christmas present ever, but it looks like it is solved with a filter added into the water supply for my sinks and my showers. The plumber did a great job and the tanks look great now so hopefully it will be ok from now on. Thanks for the reply!
