BTW, in my original post, I said I had 10 guppies left, which was true, but while in qt, one of the females had babies. Hence 20 guppies left

Prime does handle chloramines...pretty sure it has for years...
I was just mentioningit because I looked at my previous bottle of primer and it didn't take out chloramines, and the fish club here in OK made sure to let us all know they were adding chlormines to the water, so I assumed some primers didn't remove them. it never hurts to check though.
Congrats on the babies!a ray of hope at the end of the tunnel eh? haha
"Primer(s)" refer to paint, Prime is a brand of dechlorinator...other than dechlorinator, you might call it a water conditioner...but never a primer. Just FYI![]()
Hmm, chloramines have been added to the water supply for over a decade in most places...the thing about chloramine is it cannot be "gassed out" like chlorine, it definitely needs to be neutralized with dechlorinator, otherwise it will effectively cause ammonia to register, which we all know is deadly to fish.
I haven't read your last post Maribeth (got a quiche in the oven...it will be done any minute now) but it sounds like ordering the filter was a super smart move. I truly think it WAS something in the water, because contamination not related to painting, pesticides or aerosol (air fresheners and such) is just not very common. A little soap residue or a little cooking grease, the ordinary sorts of stuff, is probably not going to kill your fish in such a drastic way. Best of luck to you with your new filter, I think you will really enjoy having it for your drinking and cooking use as well!
Okay, this may be an incorrect theory, but perhaps the tank shut down in the night? As in, maybe the power went out and came back on, but it was too late for some of the fish? This is just the way my head works.
That's the single worst Christmas Present I've ever heard...
