I have to say, I've only been in a Walmart a few times, and never went to the fish department... I have to go this weekend to get some stuff (toiletries and household stuff - the walmart brand is dirt cheap and 100% as good as name brand!).

I'll definately be checking out the fish/pet section, as I've heard nothing but good things about it! *note sarcasm*

I've been to about half a dozen wal-marts here in Oklahoma City as well as several in various other towns in oklahoma and texas and they definitely vary a bunch. The one closest to me is usually pretty good other than finding someone to help. they always keep their stuff clean, fish separated well and appear to be healthy. However, I have called corporate wal-mart on another local place when I found they had every single bala shark dead, all the irredescent sharks had the most severe case of ich I've ever seen, tiger barbs were mixed in with tetras, guppies and angelfish among having incredibly dirty tanks. I had a person from corporate call me and told me they were working on things and the store manager called me to see exactly what I thought should be done. He said he was "unaware of any problems" but would be calling the local firm that they sublet to to keep up their stuff (I guess they don't have in-house employees that work the fish). I stopped by a couple weeks later and they had at least cleaned everything, no sick fish were evident and the dead fish were at least being removed. they still had some fix mixed up but not near as bad. Tiger barbs with mollies aren't my choice but it's better than guppies and angels. Most the stores in my area have about the same type of fish but the way they keep them definitely varies. same goes for petsmarts, petco's and privately owned LFS's so you just have to see what you have at your disposal.
