I got some of the PMDD mix from aquarium fertilizers.com and while it is doing great stuff for my plants I am having problems with the mixture growing some nasty funk.

The first time it happened I thought it was maybe because I had mixed in plastic container and there was some sort of reaction.

So the next time I made it in a sterilized glass vinegar bottle using distilled water.

I mixed it up exactly two weeks ago tomorrow. There is some funky looking sludgy stuff on the bottom and now it looks like something might be growing on top.

Is this normal, does this stuff need to stay in the fridge?

You could always just dry dose.

I believe this is the reason why it's recommended to keep your diluted fert liquid mix refrigerated. Yummy mold/fungus!

This is also why I'm leaning more & more to dry ferts. :)

Yes, you should keep the mix in the fridge for longer storage. Also, the gunk will still grow when it is in the fridge...but just take longer to do so. That happened to me when I first started using it too.

keeping your micros and iron separate from your phosphates should help too... then you'll only need to keep your micro mix in the fridge and that should help lower any chances of flocculants/precip in your mix.

dry dosing would eliminate this issue altogether...

I have the same stuff, from the same people. I have the same problem, but I don't think it is biological, it looks more floculent. Like stuff is precipitating...I give it a good shake before adding and it seems to be fine.

I didn't think it was either until blue stuff started growing on top of the mixture.

I also thought that it didn't have phosphate in it, which is partly why i chose it, our water is high in phosphates already so I really didn't want to add any more.

How do you dry dose pmdd?

Add Excel to it, about 10mls per 500mls of PMDD.
Potassium ascorbate also will work, just a small amount.
Muric acid also(Pool acid), (HCL) and few mls added to water prior to adding the ferts.

Tom Barr

Thanks Tom,
I just bought a big bottle of excel to treat algae in my big tank, I will make a new batch using it tonight.

Is that small amount of excel enough to bother spiral vals when used on a near daily basis?
