Hi,

Been reading up and most say the siamese fighting fish will attack the guppies as they mistake them for one of their own. Ive a 190L tank, with amongst others 5 guppies (2M 3F) - should i resist adding a Betta? I have peaceful small fish, with no renowned fin-nippers.

Has anyone any experience of such? Both beautiful fish - such a shame if it's a definite no-no. None of the books i bought even mentioned it - wasn't until the guy at the pet shop flagged it up.

Thanks in advance.

are you from Argentina Maradona fan?

No, im from Aberdeen, in Scotland - but he will always be a legend to me. The wonder goal in 1986 against our 'friends' the english still makes me smile
;)

190L - yes, i meant 190 litres (approx 50 gallons i believe)

So i guess it can be done if you are lucky, but whether you should risk it is another matter. Quite hard to tell the Bettas personality from just a few minutes in a pet shop, especially if inexperienced.

Mexico 1986, argentinians call it " God's hand" by the way, How is Scotland doing for the next world soccer cup?

you can always try the betta with the guppies, hopefully you will get a peaceful male betta. Good luck

Yes i know about the 'hand of god', but certain people seem to forget about the other goal - probably the greatest individual goal ever! As for Scotland, we are bad... very bad! We will not qualify unfortunately.

Thanks both for the advice, i will have a think and read-up some more. If i decide to get a Betta i will let you know how i get on. But if the guppies may even nip the Betta then seems like could be a bad idea in my nice peaceful aquarium!!!

you are right!, the other goal was AWESOME, didnt he start from the middle field by himself and passed like 3 or 4 players not including the goalie?

Or...

You could prepare a small 'back up' tank in case the betta you try doesn't work in your tank. :D
I like the 5 usg tanks (20 L?) for one betta myself.
But, theoretically, if you went with a 10 us gallon ( 38L?) you could use dividers, and potentially house up to 4 bettas, giving you that many opportunities to find one who lived well in your big tank.
I don't know about guppies but I do know that bettas really differ quite a bit one from another when it comes to living with other fish. I'd say you would have a decent chance of finding one out 4 of who'd work.
There are pictures of divided tanks on this forum somewhere.
If you make a happy match on the first beta, well then you have a nice Quaruntine tank!
Whatever the question, another tank is usually the answer.
