I just noticed in my guppy tank that I raise feeders in, one of the male guppies has a tail just like a swordtail. It's pretty interesting looking.

Can they cross-breed?

they "could" crossbreed but I'm not sure that it's ever happened or would naturally. There are actually some guppy/platy and guppy/molly crossbreeds that are being sold lately. The single and double swordtail guppy is a natural wild characteristic depending on how much of a sword you're talking about. can you post a pic or email one to me? Kyle

I got lucky and was able to take a few while he was not being pretty still. Tell me what you think.

Doesn't a swordtail usually have the sword at the bottom of the tail, that one is at the topline of the body, curious. Nice fish.

Yeah....that's a good point. It's probably just a guppy. I've never seen one with a tail like that before, though.

Thanks for the compliment. They are all just feeders that got for like 10 cents a piece. I just keep them around so I can have tons of free feeders. I do like how it sort of has the psychedelic color.

At first glance, I thought the picture was upside down because, yes, the sword is on the top, and it should be at the bottom. Kinda neat!

Another funny thing I noticed, is in your second picture there's a fish pointed straight down. I had to go back and take another look! :)

Feeder guppies, this is pretty common, and is most likely an endlers guppy cross. Run a search on endlers livebearers and you'll see the resemblance. The sword isn't really an endlers characteristic but as said there are guppies that develope swordtails of a sort. Most of the feeders I have bought will develope similar color and design, although you don't see a lot of them with the sword, I have a few right now as well.
As a general rule, many livebearers can cross breed, but it is less likely to be a swordtail cross than an endlers cross.

I actually had 1 cross of swordtail and guppy. My female sword had about 30 normal babies, and one dark baby. The guppies I had with her were dark in color, and the male guppy was always trying to breed with her. All the babies died though.

I can't believe no one has identified this fish yet. It is an endler's livebearer. they are an up and coming popular fish. they are very close to a guppy but a totally different species. The males don't get over an inch long and the females a little larger. Good find siminwoodstock, those are bringing a good price on aquabid right now. Buy every one they have at the store where you got them and start breeding them. the females will look like plain female feeder guppies. Kyle
