What is everyone's opinion on cross breeding fancy guppies with mosquito fish in hopes of getting a strain of fancy guppy that is also resilient in colder temperatures?

YEa, but i was thinking that i would surely get at least a few that are cold water tolerant, and then i could keep breeding them with the fancy ones to try and bring out the more colorful fins and all it would take would be just a pair or so of offspring that are colorful and cold water tolerant, and i could keep breeding them together until i have a whole bunch and take out the ones that are week from inbreeding and dont fit the bill so to speak

they're in the livebearer family so yes it will probably work. thats how we have Blood Parrots

Not all livebearers can cross. Pretty much the only ones I know of that can interbreed are guppies, endlers, and mollies. And they only work because they're from the same genus, Poecilia. Mosquito fish are from the gambusia genus, so even if you can get them to breed the offspring will be infertile as kingearwig said.

That's another good point. I had my male guppies in my mosquito fish tank with a divider for about a day, and the mosquito fish broke through and took a huge chunk out of my favorite guppy's tail. They're very aggressive, far too much for guppies to handle.

i go around to ponds and look for interesting looking mosquitofish, then put them in a pond i have. ive found some really wierd ones, like gold egg spots and pointy-ish tails....
