guppy multiplication

If I stock a 10 gallon tank with 4 guppies, how many could I have in 1 year?

goldfish + 10 gallon = not a good idea ;)

So can you only keep guppies in a 10g then?

Also, do you get coldwater guppies or did I just make that up? I found something on the internet last night called a 'wild' guppy that looks greenish, which is similar to something I used to have - but that was when I was in Africa and now in England, so the definitions of coldwater change a lot!

I'm told guppies do not go with goldfish do to the need for a small amount of salt. As for the goldfish eating them not all goldfish will eat them. In the 30gl that I keep both gold/guppie.I have 2 GF one Big bubble eye and
Med size Lion's head, the lion head eats about one a month ,the bubble eye can care less about them

Neither guppies nor danios (i.e. glofish) require additional salt.

I actually had a friend who did this, never removed fry and they actually self regulated the population. He never had more than about 25-30 at a time.

I have been free breeding fancy guppies for about 5 years in a 30gl tank.I picked 5 color types 1 male for each 3 females plus a few extra for a total of 50 fish more/less. They do pretty much self regulate.dead of winter I'm down to between 30to50 by mid summer I may have as many as 300. I do pull off the red ones and the ones with bad shaped fins and bodys. The females will hold male sperm for close to 6 months before using it to drop new fry

Uumm I would need a calculator. But if you are like my neighbor - 500-1000 a year. If your like me and let nature decide maybe 30.

I bought a dozen feeder, eight were healthy enough to survive. Of these there we no males. The first batch of fry was almost all males after 1 year I can only tell you that there are at least 50 or so but it is difficult to count them.

These are the only answers I agree with. You will not reach "plague" proportions. They will self regulate their numbers. Just as we all know that females can store sperm for several months. They can also postpone their pregnancy. I personally have experienced this. I once kept a female that had a brood, so I know she was fertile and had been previously inseminated. I put her by my window in a 5 gal. all by herself back in Aug.2008 or so. As the weather became colder so did the water in said tank. Well after six months in isolation I gave her tank set-up a new warmer location. Within 2 weeks she gave birth to over 40 healthy fry.

Wait, how do you know which goldfish eats what? - are they under 24 hr surveillance? :lipssealedsmilie:

That is really interesting. Thanks for posting.
